The concealment by the authorities of the USSR of the fact of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and subsequently an understatement of its scale influenced the way of thinking of the Soviet people. And it finally destroyed the myth of the successful construction of a bright communist future.

Tens of thousands of Soviet citizens were forcibly resettled from the most contaminated areas around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Instead, hundreds of thousands of liquidators were sent to localize the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. Despite the efforts of the Chernobyl liquidators, the exemplary city of Pripyat and more than a hundred Polessye villages remained unfit for human life.
